Xiaoxiao Xu - The Way To The Golden Mountain, Sturm & Drang, 2014, Zürich

Hardcover, clothbound with 3 different tipped in inserts, limited to 600 numbered and signed copies. Concept by Xiaoxiao Xu and Reto Caduff.

"I was 14 when I came to The Netherlands from China. Being torn from my familiar environment was frustrating, I felt a sense of isolation. In that isolation, it wasenchanting to discover photography, with it I can tell my story and show what life was like for me.

In 2009 I photographed the city in China that I came from. Wenzhou is a large port city in the eastern province of Zhejiang, with over a million residents. Many of the Chinese immigrants in the Netherlands come from here or from the villages around it. At the time I was overwhelmed by the combination of my memories and the images of contemporary China. Wenzhou sketched a picture of the city through the lens of my personal and emotional experience.

During my stay in Wenzhou I feel identified with the city, but at the same time I am also an outsider – I have the same position in the Netherlands: somewhere in between. By making photographs I seek to find my balance." (Xiaoxiao Xu)
