Reinier van der Lingen - It could have been you if it hadn't been me, Komma / d’jonge hond, 2014, Amsterdam

Hardcover, edition of 750 copies, design -SYB- (Sybren Kuiper), text Laura van der Mark.

(Photo)books dealing with cancer are always hard to digest. With Reinier's book now there are three on the virtual shelf.
In this work we follow Babet, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing chemotherapy. We only see portraits taken over the course of the therapy mixed with typical lab results that show how the treatment works on Babet's body/blood/cancer cells. Like the small changes in digits/number of the lab results we focus on changes from image to image. The change of Babet's face/look, wrinkles, her hair - sometimes little, sometimes drastic changes. You are forced to interpret how she not only physically changes but far more how the knowledge of having cancer changes here psyche. I find the breaks with the results inbetween the images more than welcome to stop and recap. It's beautiful to see Babet's smile return in the end of the book which leaves us with hope...
