Philip Gaißer & Niklas Hausser - Alma, Spector Books, 2014, Leipzig

Hardcover, design by Hammer Zürich, edited by A.K. Lenz, texts by Benjamin Bühler, Egbert Haneke, Dieter Treutter.

"Apples and analogue photography: Together with pomologists the photographer Philip Gaißer and the artist Niklas Hausser went in search of known and lesser-known apple varieties. Sometimes they would climb over garden fences to collect those rare types that today have fallen into oblivion. For their series of apples, they used 23 different 35format films, whose acquisition proved similarly difficult to that of the apple variety “renetta ananas” (Fuji Pro 400H). “Alma”— named after the ur-apple from Kazakhstan — is not only a pomological encyclopedia, but also a photographic comment on the disappearance of analogue image technology by means of an object that — similar to photography — has lost much of its variety. “Alma” can be read as a compendium of the fine differences in form, color, grain and focus — including the serial beauty of mistakes such as lint, color fault, and rot marks."
