Ken Tosa - Animals : Alternate Take, Lieutenant Willsdorff, 2018, Bordeaux
Softcover, open spine binding, design by Damien Sans, text by Ken Tosa, edition of 200 copies, signed.
Animals is a hunt, an obsessive and perverse body stalking made by a borderline and unclassifable artist... even beyond the pale.
He shoots prostitutes and women with a hidden infrared camera that he built himself such as a Miroslav Tichý.
Ken Tosa is not a pervert (at least not more than anyone else), even if he seems to have everything in common with the Mark Lewis created by Michael Powell (Peeping Tom, 1960). All he is doing is merely questioning the sexual animalism through the artistic lens – and being a Peeping Tom, prowling the bars and the night clubs, cruising the streets for a prostitute are its most obvious expressions.
Ken doesn’t come up with any answers. He shows, asks, uses it and tries to get something out of it. A mood, a cinematic atmosphere, a hard-boiled fiction. A kind of photographic gonzo in the style of Mondo Cane.
However his work, when closely observed, goes beyond this concept. He may be questioning photography and the ethics behind the act even more... The status of the image and image rights. The act of photography has been disrupted since the development of technologies and ubiquitous mini cameras in phones, glasses or watches, GoPros, surveillance cameras everywhere, the overflow of pictures etc. The concepts of privacy and consent have become completely obsolete. We can face every point of view, every instinct. It is now possible and it has just started.
