Christophe Le Toquin - The Northernmost Town, The Velvet Cell, 2014, London

Saddle-Stitch, Digital, limited Edition of 100 - Chronicles #003

Going up to the north. It is like an initiatic journey, experiencing something different. When I was requested to conduct a workshop up in the North, I did not really know what I would discover. In Hammerfest, we were not far from the North Cape. This is the northernmost town in the world, and the arms of the town are a Polar Bear. Those bears only exist further north but it gives the town a certain spirit ! I wanted to capture the essence of the place. What is different there from here. I chose an industrial estate, they are all the same all over the world, and I decided to focus on the two main specificities : snow storms and low light on the horizon. Under the snow, everything turns to black and white and you can get lost very easily. But it is close to the sea, and after the storm comes the sun with its beautiful long shadows, which draws the map of the place on the floor, in a cubist interaction between elevation and map : the representation becomes a technical drawing. (Christophe Le Toquin)
