"From the summer of 1966, two photographers toured North Karelia. Mikko Savolainen and Ismo Hölttö from Helsinki took a joint photo trip to remote areas unknown to them during their summer vacation.
At that stage, both were busy with other jobs, Hölttö as a goldsmith and Savolainen as a criminal police investigator. Like the roving reporters of the news magazines of the time, they recorded the countryside and its people: Hölttö's typical vivid portraits of people with a 6x6 Rolleiflex camera, and Savolainen's landscapes and situations with a small camera. In the same fall, while looking at summer pictures, the idea of making a book came up.
In the following years, the photographers continued their trips to North Karelia until the book Suomea was published by Gummerus for Christmas 1970. The text of the book was written at Savolainen's request by Aku-Kimmo Ripatti, a leading conversationalist and writer from Ämänkoski, and it begins: "It is cruel to say that Hyvinvointisuomi has stripped Kurjasuomi half naked. However, it is, there is no need to be afraid of it. (…) This is also Finland: income differences are growing both among people and between regions. The general manager of Yleisradio receives at least ten times more salary than the cleaner of the Kesäkatu stairs..."
The book was a visual pamphlet that struck the reader's eyes with the restructuring of the countryside during the years of the great emigration, a time when the poverty of the widowed mother's extended family was absolute and when the Finnish Rural Party united small farmers to the political front for the last time. The opening, in which Ismo Höltö's image of a homesteader living in modest circumstances but with a Vennamo self-confidence with his wife under his arm, is combined with the house standing behind the waterlogged land in Savolainen's view summarizes the book's subject area."
